2006 honda cr-v review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Convenient and easy to drive. introductionthe honda cr-v is roomy, convenient and easy to drive. It rides smoothly, more so than most suvs. It's surprisingly maneuverable in tight quarters and handles well on winding roads yet it's stable at freeway speeds, even in stiff crosswinds.  the honda cr-v and toyota rav-4 were the first of the cute-utes, small vehicles based on cars that delivered the cargo versatility of a sport utility, an upright seating position, and all-wheel drive.  the cr-v shares its basic structure with the honda civic, giving it the ride quality and handling of a car. Besides being less expensive, the cr-v is smaller and more maneuverable than a full-sized suv. Most important, it doesn't look like a minivan.  the cr-v isn't much good off-road, but it's available with a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the latter giving it good winter weather capability.  this second-generation cr-v was launched as a 2002 model and the styling was revised for 2005. Lx also comes standard with integrated keyless entry and 16-inch steel wheels. The se interior is upgraded with heated leather seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Exterior additions include body-colored door mirrors, bumpers, side molding, door handles and spare wheel cover.  safety features that come standard on all cr-vs include frontal and side-impact air bags, anti-lock brakes (abs) and vehicle stability assist with traction control (an electronic stability control system). walkaroundthis second-generation honda cr-v features smoother styling than the original, pre-2002 models, and for 2005 the styling was revised with a redesigned grille and bumper, and cylindrical headlights. The cr-v still sports its trademark high-mount tail lights on either side of the rear window.  the rear glass opens on its own, separately from the tailgate, which is good. The se makes the cr-v look more like the honda pilot, a midsize suv.  in terms of crashworthiness, the cr-v rates highly. It earned five stars from the national highway traffic safety administration for front and side impacts, the highest ratings possible. Remember, though, that nhtsa's tests compare cars in a given class rather than across all categories, so a five-star compact suv isn't necessarily as safe as a five-star full-size suv. interiorthe honda cr-v has a friendly interior that's easy to live with, and quite convenient in the daily hustle. Getting in and out is quick and easy and doesn't require climbing or stooping.  the front seats are excellent. And it's roomy, with generous headroom and leg room up front. The moonroof reduces headroom by nearly two inches, however, and taller drivers will notice.  the rear seats offer space and comfort as well. The rear bench is neither too soft nor too hard, and all three rear positions have three-point belts and head restraints.  the driver gets gauges that are easy to read, with traditional white numerals on a black background. Cruise control is standard, as is an adjustable steering column. We loved the stereo and six-disc in-dash cd changer that come standard on the ex and se. Honda does not provide a compass, however. The parking brake is disguised, subtly integrated into the vertical panel forward of the center console. As odd as the placement might seem at first, using the hand brake gets more comfortable in short order.  a convenient, collapsible tray table is provided between the front seats with a couple of cup holders and a recess for a cell phone. The center console accommodates cds and cassettes. Almost everything else seems to be where it should be, and there are no less than 21 storage nooks spread through the cabin. Coat hooks are provided above the rear seats. The cover for the spare-tire bin does double duty as a folding picnic table.  the cr-v hauls cargo well. The 60/40 split rear seat slides forward and back over a range of six inches to maximize either passenger or cargo space when the seat is up. driving impressionthe honda cr-v has enough power to merge into fast-moving traffic without worries. Honda is a leader in engine technology, and the cr-v's 2. 4-liter, 16-valve, double overhead-cam engine benefits from intelligent variable valve timing, which honda calls i-vtec. This system allows the engine to generate lots of usable power while keeping fuel economy at an impressive epa-estimated 22/27 city/highway miles per gallon. Like all hondas, the cr-v is a clean-running vehicle. Downshifts come quickly, and full-throttle upshifts come smoothly just before redline. It rides more smoothly than most sport utilities, which makes for pleasant motoring beat-up city streets. It feels sure-footed on twisting roads. Even when driven hard, the cr-v handles reasonably well. It doesn't push excessively at its front end or slide at the rear, and the tires offer good grip. In short, the cr-v drives more like a car than a truck. It's maneuverable in tight parking lots, thanks to its tight turning radius (33. 8 feet).  vehicle stability assist, standard on all models, uses sensors at each wheel and the anti-lock brake system to modulate the electronic throttle and apply brake force to individual wheels as needed to maintain traction and avoid skids on slippery pavement and in tight turns.  the all-wheel-drive system that comes on the 4wd models operates full time, with the bulk of the power directed to the front wheels. It's a great aid when winter snowstorms hit, adding vastly improved stability and traction in slippery conditions. And with six cupholders in the second row alone, eight door cargo pockets and the ability to carry a 4x8-foot sheet of building material flat inside, finding a place for everything isn't an issue.  the majority of pilots are all-wheel-drive models that allow another 1000 pounds in tow rating and provide better acceleration and climbing in snow. However, with the same tires and brakes, they don't stop or change direction any better than the front-drive version. Each model is offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (4wd). All mechanical and safety components and systems are identical across the range. Pilot lx 4wd 29,495) adds the real time 4wd system.  pilot ex 30,745) upgrades with three-zone climate control, alloy wheels, security system, heated body-color mirrors, roof rails, fog lights, chrome exhaust tips, homelink, conversation mirror, eight-way power driver seat, xm radio, and exterior temperature indicator. Surfaces that aren't sloped inward at the roof pay dividends in head space and big-box cargo loading, and the three inches of extra length have gone between the axles and into the cabin.  with substantial chrome trim and eyebrows in the headlight housings, fog lights much higher in the bumper, and a hatch that tapers more to the sides than forward at the top, the pilot looks wider it is. Viewed from dead astern the mid-size pilot appears as bulky as the full-size toyota sequoia.  panel crimps define the wheel openings, aiding the rugged look without adding width or bolt-on parts that might promote rust. The third-row side window has been separated by a thick chunk of sheetmetal, to no apparent detriment in driver vision or third-row comfort. The top tow rating remains 4500 pounds on 4wd and 3500 pounds on front-drive models, but the 4500 is no longer limited to boats or low-profile trailers. As a result, they differ dramatically in use. interiorregardless of trim level, the honda pilot interior appears well thought out and assembled, with functional touches at every turn and a luxury factor that increases alongside price. The cloth is a subdued design with just enough pattern to hide stains that become part and parcel of any eight-seat vehicle. One may desire more features from higher-priced models yet the basics are all here, including power windows and locks and air conditioning for front and rear. Just like the priciest pilot, door armrests have soft cushioned elbow pads and there's no cheap feel in frequently felt surfaces. This seat split-folds 60/40 with the short cushion on the right side for easiest loading, both sides slide fore and aft for maximum flexibility or keeping that baby seat closer, the climate control is handy at the back of the console, and each door has two cupholders in the armrest and dual pockets below. Although it appears as merely a fixed cushion above the center armrest, the center headrest easily lifts and extends to a useful height.  the third row is easily accessible: one lift of the lever at kid's-eye height in the center row backrest tilts the seat and slides it forward for third-row access. The optional rear-seat entertainment system is much the same as the top-ranked setups in the odyssey and acura mdx.  at least in lx and ex trims this is a jump-in-and-go kind of ride. Redesigned sedans and coupes set high bar for midsize class. introductionthe 2013 accord represents the ninth generation of the nameplate. The 2013 honda accord has a new platform, engine, transmissions, suspension, bodywork, interior, electronics and safety equipment. It is appropriate it to call it a new car.  reversing a common trend, the 2013 honda accord is smaller on the outside and, by total volume, smaller on the inside. However, dimensionally the cabin is bigger in every measure except front-seat hiproom. Fuel economy ratings are very competitive. The v6 engine is mildly revised from 2012 and available with a new 6-speed automatic or, on coupe only, a 6-speed manual. It isn't about being the fastest in a straight line or flattest around the corners but rather being well-rounded and doing everything better than average.  we find the new wrapper far more attractive than the last one. It's neither as dramatic as some nor as bland as others, honda preferring proven middle ground to extreme. The 2013 accord has advanced in crash safety and, given the performance of the sister-car acura tl, is expected to get top safety scores.  this ninth-generation accord will not dominate the market it and the camry battled over for decades because there are now many more viable competitors. The ford fusion may take the design mantle away from the hyundai sonata and kia optima, but hyundai has a genesis coupe to compete with accord. The nissan altima lineup includes a coupe, and the altima sedan is new for 2013 and touts excellent epa ratings, as does the roomy volkswagen passat tdi introduced for 2012. The chevrolet malibu is new for 2013, and a new mazda 6 is expected for 2013. Drivers who want more space, performance or features might also look to a nissan maxima or toyota avalon. Where the window line on many cars extends from the top of the hood to the top of the trunk, the accord's runs more from the headlight cut-line to the top of the tail lights. This yields not only a credible sedan profile but also adds to the airy cabin spaciousness and proper rear-seat headroom. From overhead the center section is mildly barrel-shaped, the widest point where front and rear doors meet appearing pointed relative the smooth lines of the roof above it.  there's a mild forward tilt to the profile, enhanced by the scalloped front door panels and raked headlight housings. Viewed from behind, the front wheel opening is inset above the sill and shows some tire, an image we associate more with sports cars than family sedans: it adds to appeal though we didn't get to see any potential dirtying effect it will have in rain or snow. Rear doors look like long-wheelbase versions of some sedans, with an almost flat section at the top and opening that runs straight from the door sill to the window kink popularized by bmw and hofmeister about half a century past.  the coupe is nicely proportioned and like the sedan uses a higher than average roofline over the back seat for better-than-normal rear seat room. Unlike the sedan the tail lights do not extend into the trunk lid, and the chrome lower molding is much wider. A more attractive honeycomb lower grille and chrome strip at the bottom edge are handsome without being edgy. Coupes get a more pronounced center section, honeycomb grilles top and bottom, and round fog lights in squared openings for more attitude; it's the same width as the sedan, just an inch lower. The headlight housings and upper grille get blue accents, the hood, bumper and fog light apertures are different, and a black bar bisects the big single grille opening as on many audis. The wheels are also gloss-black, with forward-climbing metal spokes, a sinister look more rapper than tree-hugger. A very obvious blue-ringed, hybrid-badged charging port in the left-front fender is at odds with the square fuel door at the back; we prefer the chevrolet volt's approach of one discrete opening on each side.  at the rear a chrome strip across the trunk and clear backup/signal lenses separate trunk lid and rear window from the back of the car, the end result reminiscent of a hyundai genesis. Honda practicality, suv utility. introductionhonda's cr-v hauls cargo and kids, battles bad weather, and is easy to drive. Honda knows most sport-utilities rarely leave the pavement, and the cr-v was not intended to tackle tough terrain. The 4wd lx and ex models come standard with a five-speed manual gearbox. Automatic transmission adds $800 to the bottom line. To this, ex models add abs, remote keyless entry, dual power color-keyed mirrors, cd stereo and alloy wheels. Se gets a leather interior and steering wheel, a three-in-one am/fm/cassette/cd stereo, body colored side moldings, a hard cover for the spare tire, and chrome accents on the grille. walkaroundhonda's cr-v is similar in concept and execution to toyota's rav4. Unlike most suvs, these two mini sport-utilities are based on passenger car platforms. The cr-v is based on honda's subcompact civic line. The rav4 is based on the toyota camry. The cr-v is considerably bigger and roomier than the rav4, however. Second, it maximizes interior volume. interiorlike all hondas, the cr-v's interior is subdued, comfortable, thoughtfully designed, and nicely finished. A new feature for 2001 are child safety seat anchors for the rear seats. Big mirrors provide excellent rearward visibility.  the instrument panel is straightforward and logical, with secondary controls that are instantly recognizable, particularly to anyone who's ever driven a honda. An exception: power window switches, located on the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel, are a bit awkward when underway.  the column-mounted shifter seems out of place in something that calls itself a sport-utility. On the other hand, putting the shift lever on the steering column allowed honda to create a convenient minivan-style pass-through between the front seats. The manual transmission shifter takes up a bit of that space.  a handy tray with integrated cupholders flips up between the front seats. Two more cupholders slide out below the climate controls on automatic transmission models. An abundance of storage pockets and bins are located throughout.  for all its engaging detail touches, though, the most endearing trait of the cr-v interior is its roominess. There's a lot of front headroom and legroom and plenty of rear legroom if the people in the front seats cooperate. There's a sizable cargo space behind the rear seats. The rear seatbacks flip and fold individually to expand cargo space. The cr-v even comes with a picnic table that stows in the rear floor. Pop it out, flip down the legs and it's party time.  like the rav4, the cr-v carries its spare tire on a rack mounted on the tailgate. Unlike the rav4, and a lot of other external mounts, the cr-v's is low enough so that it doesn't interfere with vision to the rear. The tailgate on the honda cr-v is a two-piece affair. The glass upper portion lifts up, while the lower portion swings open like a door. The operator must first unlock the window portion, flip it up, and then swing the door open. There is a rear window release inside; it's on the downside of the dashboard, to the left of the driver's left knee. This releases the window, which must be opened before the door. driving impressiongood ride quality is a cr-v strong suit. It's supple enough to absorb the nasty little irregularities of rough pavement without excessive compromise in handling response.  part of that is due to its relatively long wheelbase. At 103. 2 inches, the cr-v wheelbase is long for its overall size. That's typical of current honda designs, and it's one of the reasons for honda's success with ride quality.  the cr-v isn't quite as quick on its feet as the rav4, but it is thoroughly competent. The torque peak doesn't come until 4500 rpm. As a result, standing-start getaway is sluggish. The 5-speed improves performance in this area considerably. Once it builds up a head of steam, though, the cr-v is quicker than a rav4. That's a little more power than the rav4's 2. 0-liter engine, but the cr-v is a little heavier, so power-to-weight ratios are similar.  cr-v's engine is relatively quiet, less noisy than the rav4, at most operating speeds. But both vehicles come with a fair amount of wind noise.  the cr-v's all-wheel-drive system primarily drives the front wheels. When system sensors detect loss of traction to the front wheels, it feeds torque to the rear wheels until proper grip is restored. The cr-v does not offer a locking center differential, low-range set of gears, a limited-slip rear differential, or traction control. This limits the cr-v's capability in areas with steep climbs, limited traction, or deep sand. So be careful about driving the cr-v on the beach.  overall, the cr-v drives like a compact station wagon, which is essentially what it is. There is nothing remotely truck-like about its behavior. Steering is precise and feeds plenty of road feel back to the driver. Front brakes are discs, but the rear uses drum brakes. summarythe honda cr-v is an excellent piece of work. It's much roomier than the rav4. Even with more than 8 inches of ground clearance, the cr-v is not a good choice for off-road use. While europeans love them, americans generally don't like the idea of hatchbacks, although we detect those attitudes may be mellowing.  from the front three-quarter view, the fit is more striking than the ford fiesta, mazda2 and toyota yaris because of the sharpness of the nose and the mini-wagon body shape. It doesn't have their roundness, and looks more like a tiny wagon than a five-door. It has a wide low stance, slight fender flares and sharp character lines along the sides. Also competing in this class are the scion xd and kia soul, boxy, tall subcompacts.  from the rear, the fit's liftgate is like that of a mini suv.  the chassis structure, called ace (advanced compatibility engineering), is designed to enhance crash integrity. The frame rails are polygon-shaped and computer designed to disperse the forces of crash impact all around the car, upward and downward, instead of allowing them to be jammed at the occupants. The bowed crossmember under the dashboard plays a role. From the driver's seat, it feels like a bigger car than it is. But that big windshield is nice here in america, too. There are also two cupholders forward of the shift lever on the floor, and two more for the rear seat passengers. And two gloveboxes, enabling cleaner organization.  there are comfortable usable armrests on the front doors for the driver and passenger, and flip-up armrests between the front seats.
